Radio … My Love, My Passion – Book

Barry writes: “I thought the days when I was a rookie were strange. I’m having a hard time putting the book down!”
The love affair truly began when I received my own radio, the one pictured on the cover. It was the beginning of my “education” in the industry, knowledge that would serve me well through my entire career … which began at a small AM station. Then, following a stint in the U. S. Army, I helped launch one of America’s first FM Stereo stations in Bethesda, Maryland. Next was another start-up, this time in Philadelphia in 1963, where I would earn the “the father of the beautiful music format” title. Then, in 1969, came the opportunity to take an unknown New York City FM station and lead it to a top-rated position in the Big Apple … and that role would lead to my musical programming being heard over a span of two decades on hundreds of stations across the United States. Finally, as the calendar turned to a new century, I had the opportunity to join another start-up, XM Satellite Radio … where I created three different formats which remain among SiriusXM’s most popular to this day.
Marlin attributes his amazing success to his philosophy that, no matter what the situation, the Listener is #1!

Description
Marlin first discovered musical recordings when he was elementary school-age, when they came from phonograph records that played at 78 revolutions-per-minute. This was just the prelude to his love affair with radio, which began at the end of World War Two when he received his very own AM-only radio. The book is a radio industry history lesson as seen through the eyes of a man whose career spanned 60 years … a journey that began when radio listening was still mostly on the AM band, and had many twists and turns along the way. You’ll also read about numerous innovative actions which proved successful not just for Marlin and his station, but were actions that quickly spread throughout the industry and were copied by stations across many formats. Finally, as the book closes, you’ll find numerous “nuggets of wisdom” from the likes of Casey Kasem, Harry Selfridge and Mother Teresa.
